Matt phillips and developing young talent at Blackpool

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/jan/09/five-things-learned-this-weekend-fa-cup?INTCMP=SRCH

When watching the FA cup this weekend I all of a sudden lit up as I saw 3 players of specific interest at Blackpool. (Danny Wilson, Tom Ince and Matt Phillips).

I mentioned Matt Phillips last year in this blog when he was in the premier league and I thought he looked a real prospect and a real talent on the wing going past players and showing some excellent promise but he only got limited playing time considering how well Blackpool was doing at the start of the season. (pls see references to Matt Phillips posts below) This weekend he showed exactly what he can do going through the middle up front. Primarily he was used as a right winger at blackpool last year when he came on and that is the only position he played at Wycombe where he came from.

The UK media seemed to have just noticed him now.

I would have liked us to sign a deal with blackpool last year for a good chunk of money for his rights, but have him stay at Blackpool (maybe commit to 2 years) to develop. Jonjo Shelvey did develop at Blackpool, got plenty of playing time and scored 6 goals in 9 games before he was called back to Liverpool when Lucas got injured.

As of Jan 1st 2012 Danny Wilson went on loan to Blackpool. To me he was a somewhat forgotten man at LFC, a Scotland international that arrived from Ragers having played well in both SPL and CL. At LFC he has not had anywhere near the playing time to develop. He was no. 5 in the pecking order at centre back at Anfield and he is another I wonder why it has taken so long to loan him out.

With Agger, Skertel, Carragher and Coates (most recently signed) ahead of him in the pecking order, it is only right to send these guys out on loan to develop their talent. If we can keep this relatinoship getting better and better it is a terrific venue for young LFC players to get better and it also clearly benefits Blackpool. Hopefully the players can be good enough to get Blackpool promoted.

This may be a way to make our club attractive to younger players. If we can show a proven trackrecord of along with Blackpool (who incidently has limited resources) devlop players with promise into premier league quality players due to playing time and great coaching by Ian Holloway it will all of a sudden be a competitive advantage when trying to sign the best young talent in britain or else where.

For blackpool they can rely on loanee players from us that they can keep for extended periods of times (could be part of the agreement).

It was nice to get Jonjo back but I wonder if and when he will keep getting playing time with Spearing, Adam, Gerrard and Henderson ahead of him in the cue. Despite playing well against Oldham is he going to get much playing time in the league going forward or would he have been better staying at Blackpool as well for his own development?

I think the question needs to be posed as he seems to be a terrific talent. I guess part of that question comes down to anyone else taking the defensive role in the centre of the park.

Against oldham he featured on the right but I do not think that is the right position for him, because I like the "stero typical winger" ala Nani/Ronaldo//Robben/Joaquin/Jarvis/Downing that has the pace, technique and ability to get past people and likes to stay wide. I think Matt Phillips can be that players and I think Pennant had it in him but never developed his potential. Glen Johnson also does but is considered only a wing back/right back.

Danny Wilson by the way had a great game against Fleetwood and so did Tom Ince. I would like to see them do well against better opposition, including Matt Phillips before I make any final judgement on any of them but I still think Blackpool can be a great development arena for our younger players.

Stian

For exmaple Nzogbia, Matt Phillips at Blackpool or even that Eljero Elia would be brilliant in my opinion. We just lack top 4 players at the moment. It comes back to what I have mentioned previously. ...

Wonder if we are in the race to sign the young alex camberlain from Southampton as well. Would prefer him to Young as I think we would overpay for Young. Matt Phillips would be briliant from Blackpool. ...
