January transfer window
So the January Transfer Window is here in a few hours and here are some of my thoughts with regards
I think we need to business in the window if we want to be able to fight for the title. Yes our current squad might still be enough but we have not won the title in 18-19 yrs just now and that is too long in my opinion. Therefore it is worth spending a 10m to strengthen the right back position. I am not saying that Arbeloa is a bad player but he does not create enough going forward in my opinion. Degen is unproven and injury prone it seems (another Aurelio on our hands) Carragher is a central defender and turns inside too often when put in the right back position. He does not ever try to go around the defender or hit the cross in with his left foot. This is what Finnan did so well in his best two years with Liverpool (2005 and 2006) but he lost the last year he was with us.
Boswinga, Sagna and Rafael Da Silva is all better offensively than Alvaro Arbeloa and hopefully that is where we can improve in my opinion.
Who can we sign? The roumers have been talking about Glen Johnson and I think that would be an amazing signing for us. Another great right back that this season has been employed more at centre back is Micha Richards. He has lost his international place and he is still young with bags of potential. I think he would be a great investment however. He has got pace, arial presence and is a great talent but needs a bit of coaching, tactical knowledge and experience. I think Liverpool could be the perfect fit for him. The critical difference on these two players and the clubs they play for is that Man City is going places. Moving up and have bags of money to spend. They do not need to let Micha Richards go and I am sure that Mark Hughes is very reluctant to see that happening. The other option is Glen Johnson at Pourtsmouth. The club has publically stated that it is for sale and if enough money are offered for their priced assets they will sell. Hopefully we can offer something in the region of 8m and go out and pick him up. He is very very good going forward and again similar to Richards needs a bit of tactical knowledge and experience to know when to burst forward and when to stay back. Rafa can give him that.
Other than that I do not think we need to sign any players. Maybe some youngster pushing for a place in right midfield since Pennant does not seem to feature in Rafa's plans any longer.
